... Okay, am I going first, or. [she is kind of laughing about this because it's like that picture of the office where they're all holding up finger guns at each other]
I should whack you for that one. [she says, like she's not laughing at the pun.]
Good to know. [she doesn't press any further because gale didn't and he's smarter than her and she should probably follow his lead?] I don't know that I'll tell anybody else mine. Whatever power there is, I'm not interested.
I’m not going to run the risk of exposing what I am to someone who turns around and goes [ clasped hands for emphasis ] “really? Me too!” and then BAM— [ hand explosion motions ] they die, I die, nobody’s happy.
… Although. I do wonder about this “more power” thing they mention.
[ …
you know when you see a kid and they know they should do the thing but they don’t want to do the thing and now they just look mad at nothing and everything, maybe stomping their foot and you have to wait to see if they’ll do The Thing they should do?
that’s astarion right now, minus the foot stomping. give him a moment. ]
[ he'll look between karlach and astarion for a moment, but, listen, he knows them both decently well enough at this point. karlach is digging her ditch in the sand (deeper and wider than a line) and astarion is the world's thirstiest horse that cannot have its head shoved into water, so. there's little point in arguing with either of them at this very second.
because astarion is throwing a little fit though, he does sort of feel compelled to fill a bit of the silence. ]
... In Reithwin town, to either of your memories, did I absorb a portion of the Shadow Weave from one of the Thorm family?
[ astarion opens his mouth, begrudging as all hell and done with his little grumpy internal tantrum on sharing his monster type.
and then he closes it because the topic has changed. ]
…
[ hm. ]
No…? You messed around with a weird… shadowy sigil thing on a desk in Moonrise to make a lantern, but ultimately destroyed it, if that’s what you’re talking about. I think Mystra gave you a gold star or something for being a good boy.
[ oh yes he's just nodding along at astarions description, but he does make a face at the end where he says Mystra-]
Firstly, that is not what I was describing, but I will have you know in my memory I did craft that lantern. Ah ... it seemed prudent, and well. A waste of a decent enough sigil.
Secondly that wasn't what I was referring to. When we defeated the Thorms, they were imbued with a distinct form of Shadow Weave, unique and cultivated within them after their time bathed in the dark waters of the Shadow Curse. Something entirely outside of Mystra's realm, and control. I chose to absorb it, and now have a greater pool of magic that I can cast within a day, of vital import in a situation where the difference between life and death can be made with the certainty of an extra application of Fireball.
When you are in very dire circumstances, sometimes these trades have proven ... quite helpful. I think they are worth considering.
[ though i will say both of these things in a row just make it sound like he was Acting Out against mystra lol ]
[ watches gale have his own little tantrum because astarion brought up his ex. ]
Oh.
No, the Thorms just died. [ he makes a little popping motion with his hand. ] One by one. Nasty little creatures, honestly. You know, I did wonder if that Kate girl was also shadow cursed, but she seems far more in control of her facilities for that to be the case.
Oh. Yeah, we had to fight most of them, except the drinking guy. I outdrank him.
[did you know that if you're a barbarian and you pass a saving throw chugging the drink three times in a row, your companions think it's the funniest thing in the world and approve. anyway. that's not the point.
she folds her arms, tail swishing back and forth in agitation. she is (alli voice) realizing that she's with the two party members who would eat a tadpole without a persuasion roll and is getting tired already.]
Look. I'm not your Mum, either of you, but trusting some shitty deal to give you powers without consequences that will fuck your life over twofold is stupid.
[she is sensitive about devil deals ok
and then:]
... Well, all three of us are different, at least.
[ can he fuck over his life any worse right now? just asking. he doesn't say it, but you know.
exploded. also maybe now is not the time to admit he did chow on some tadpoles, because listen. that power you get where you insta-kill someone with 1 or 2 hp left instead of having to waste a turn on them? the fucking best on tactician. ]
That we are. We also now have an advantage - if we are able to ascertain others who match one of our number, we will have a chance to present it as an option, instead of an entire leap of faith.
[ makes no comment icly or oocly if astarion inhaled a tadpole or not. keep guessing. ]
Ah, because without confirmation from us there's nothing binding there. That is a luxury some of the others here won't have.
There's always a chance there'll be something pulled to try and get us to find the other person whether we want to or not, given they want us all dead.
Yeah, yeah. I got the number of someone already who wanted me to tell them if I found their match, 'cause they don't want to do the power thing. The deal is if I find the other one, I tell them the first isn't interested.
Seems like a safe way to do it, for sure.
... But there is a chance we'll have to. I'm not putting that aside entirely.

[ yeah it was a damn good pun. glancing over at astarion, and there is some Contemplation in the look, but again. he won't push. ]
Very well.
I suppose it raises a conundrum similar to that of consuming additional tadpoles. To trade the potentiality of power for a risk in kind.
