[ he raises his eyebrows so high!!!!!!! this is both slightly insulting and so dead on that he can't even really argue it. but he's going to try anyway. ]
I see. Well I personally think I'm an excellent listener! Provided what's being told to me is worth listening to.
[IT'S NOT AT ALL. He mostly just looks amused, though, in a faint and good-natured kind of way.]
I do believe that the basis of being a good listener revolves around what you can provide to the party speaking to you, rather than what they can provide you.
[There's a light little laugh in response, though he raises his hand to cover his mouth politely.]
It's very good to know where one's strengths and weaknesses lie. I don't mean to tease you when we've only just met, though, so I do hope you'll forgive me.
Of course! May I introduce you to Gale of Waterdeep, an astonishingly talented Wizard, master of the Weave and a great breadth of knowledge of the arcane. He has excellent taste in both books and wine, a skill for conversation and lanceboard, and is a fairly dab hand at cooking. Handsome, to boot.
[ he does like a. im trying to think of how to describe the gesture. its like a dorkass cartoon little arm swing. ]
Lucas is also very charmed by this, in the sort of way that anyone would be charmed by a doofy lil goofball.]
Oh, my! That's quite the introduction. Though I'm afraid I don't know what a weave or wizard is, I can at least appreciate the rest just fine. Though I'd imagine those are the most important to you, given you led with them? Would you perhaps mind explaining a bit...?
An excellent foundation, though curses and blessings tend to fall more into a cleric's domain instead of the studies of wizards. Though, as much as they distance themselves from it at times, clerics too pull from the threads of the Weave.
So yes, the Weave is the foundation of all magic, one of the fundamental matters that make up the universe, and embodied by Mystra, goddess of magic. The Lady of Mysteries. It suffuses all corners of the world with very few exceptions, and from it, every spell and every manipulation of magic is pulled. A wizard studies the Weave, to create spells of every kind - not just blessings and curses. Illusions to astonish the senses, making form and shape from simple matter, pushing and pulling reality to and fro to embody both creation and destruction. It is, in my opinion, the most beautiful art in existence.
[Not only is this a simple enough explanation that he can follow along despite knowing not a damn thing about DND magic, but he finds himself looking on with a sort of fondness at the very poetic description.]
I can understand what Karlach meant when she complimented your ability to speak well. From your words alone, I feel inclined to agree, even though the Weave is an entirely foreign concept.
[And then, NOT KNOWING THEY'VE ALL BEEN NERFED:] Would it be a terrible trouble to show me something?
[ he has a very teacher's air about it, as well as a clearly deep passion for it. it is, after all, his entire life. ]
I'm glad I'm able to convey it well. It's probably more disappointing for me than it is for you that at this moment, I cannot. They've managed to suppress it here, somehow. I cannot cast.
I do have to admit I find it quite disorienting. There was a time in my life I was more afraid of the loss of my magic than I was of death itself.
[If it weren't for the fact that there are shadow people and tieflings running around, there is perhaps a small part of him that would wonder if this dude was pulling his leg...
As things stand, though, he just gives Gale a sympathetic look.]
Oh, dear... I can't imagine what that must feel like. It's as good as an intrinsic part of you, correct? Would it not feel the same as waking up missing an arm or an eye?
Perhaps even moreso. I believe at times it makes up more of me than anything else. I've been practicing since I was a child, barely able to walk. I was a prodigy, a natural talent. I've never been anything else but a wizard.
You've already listed off a number of other skills beyond magic, along with your charming personality, so I'm certain you'll be able to manage just fine until we can get things sorted again.
Aha, I don't mind listening! Far from it, really. You'll find that I'm quite boring by comparison, I'm afraid... My home is rather isolated. I spend my time there teaching, which is an adventure of its own, but we don't have the grand things many of you seem to.
Oh-- A teacher! How wonderful. That seems perfectly grand to me. I always entertained the idea of teaching. It is traditional after all, to take apprentices, but I've always been busy with research and such, and then, well, the orb, so there simply hasn't been an opportunity, but ...
[ realizing he's just casually dropped the orb into conversation again, and making a bit of grimace at himself but. it's fine. he's gotten so used to everyone around him knowing that he forgot how strange the explanation of it is. ]
Ah, yes. The orb is-- A condition I have. For a time, it made me quite ill. [ he rubs at his chest, like it smarts, over the circular tattoo-like mark there that winds up the side of his neck, along the veins. ] It is the reason that I would consider the future to be ... less than certain.
Ah... [His expression grows a little more solemn, vaguely sympathetic in the distant way of someone who Thinks they might be understanding what's going on here but isn't entirely sure.]
Then - I take that to mean it isn't currently making you ill, but that this might change at some point?

I do try and provide the best I can, but I suppose I can be big enough to admit my listening skills could use some fine-tuning.

[ he really doesn't seem that bothered by it in the end. people say so much meaner things to him all the time. ]
It helps, I have a great many strengths!

I'm certain! Would you be so kind as to share some with me?

I suppose we can start with the basics. Do you know what magic is?

[Their whole island is cursed! He knows curses the most!]

I take it that you mean it may not be in your future for reasons that are separate from our group kidnapping, though...?

[ he sort of does a laugh to himself. ]
There's other reasons too, of course, not least of which is being trapped here, so perhaps I shouldn't dwell on it this much.
