I had plenty of guidance however, luckily for her continued gardening hobby. My talents had come under the notice of Mystra, the goddess of magic herself. At first, she sent her Chosen, Elminster, to mentor me. And then later, she herself took me under her wing.
I suppose I would more accurately say she embodies all magic. The One True Spell. But yes, in turn, she governs her Weave and the way in which mages may use that power - its limits and its rules.
I suppose you wouldn't know, but you've asked me this question at a very confusing time. Perhaps ask me again in a few days?
[ well, it's his turn to have a face of discomfort. after all, he has just met this person, and is starting to tell This Story, and isn't quite sure how to encompass all of it. so, for now, dodging it. ]
I fear I've dominated this conversation long enough! I think perhaps it is my turn to ask about you, yes?
Oh? Curious. What makes medicine modern versus ... not? I would imagine the latest techniques would involve new applications of magic, but if you're simply treating in a mundane fashion, that would be quite novel indeed.
Magic is an occult practice where I come from. [ I guess maybe Pagan religion would be the closest approximation to describe it. ] There are studiers, and churches dedicated to learning the craft, but it isn't as if it's embedded in everyone's daily lives.
And I know disinfectants and needles work, both objectively and the logic behind how they heal.
The idea of taking a gamble on occult healing is a bit too nebulous when I'm handling lives, right?
I hope you don't take any offense when I tell you that the last time I ran into someone who practiced objective healing complete with scapels, needles and disinfectants, it was among the most horrifying experiences of my life.
[ doctors be fucking crazy sometimes, man. ]
Then again, he did not care much for the preservation of life. Shar worshippers rarely do.
None taken, I guess. I've heard my fair share of insults hurled at me while someone was under my care. Field care does tend to occasionally happen without anaesthetics.
Well you'd hardly receive the same reception from me, I would be nothing but gracious and courteous for the attention! That is the danger of being a wizard on the field of battle, sometimes you do require a bit of constant healing attention. Difficult to move properly in full armor.
[ nodding. ]
A surgeon, more specifically, who believed that pain and mutilation was an excellent way in which to worship his dark goddess. In the end he wasn't too difficult to deal with, however. We simply convinced him that allowing his assistants to experiment upon him was the truest form of worship one could conceive of.
Though I suppose in retrospect repeating that story makes me sound absolutely sociopathic. I promise, it was for a righteous cause!
If it helps, I have absolutely no interest in causing unnecessary pain to anyone. I'd encourage you to take the biggest swig of whiskey while at it, honestly.
[ Gale your buffness and full armour. Daan does seem to understand the vibe though. Tfw times of war and all.
He makes. Such a disgusted face at the description of this guy. Good lord. ]
That's pretty twisted...
...
The fucked up surgeon. Not you. Sounds like you found a decent solution for the low bar considered.
I see. Well, war is a terrible thing. I've been quite lucky for the most part that we have been relatively at peace during my time - war mages hardly have the best go of it I find.
The Kaiser enacted peace talks as soon as he approached a certain area of Bohemia. It's all still very fresh, of course, but it does look like it's paused at the minimum.
Ideally, it's over, but it is the Second Great War, after all. Who knows how the next few decades will unfold.
But that's not really important information for us here.

[ Boy howdy. ]
I don't know that I have anything interesting to tell, really, but ask away. Maybe I can answer a few things.

[ anyway. ]
Your profile mentions your occult, and then healing. You're a cleric? Or something similar?
no subject
[ Yeah!! ]
...
No, just modern medicine. A doctor, not a cleric.

A worshipper and yet a traditional physician?

So, you're a wartime medic? Often treating on the field I take it?

Yeah, I served. Escaped the infantry because I knew my way around a scalpel.
[ Maybe he should consider himself lucky for that, but you know. Going to war is going to war. ]

Past tense, however? No longer?
